Painting Details
In this series, the water imagery represents the unpredictable and ever-changing nature of the human experience.
What Keeps the Water in the Sea? is a metaphor for the things that hold us together as we move through the unknown. The bedrock of the earth and gravity keep the water in the sea. Similarly, everyone chooses their own foundation when navigating change. This body of work celebrates the spirit of moving forward through transition and transformation.

“I have been following Stephanie's work since she was Artist-in-Residence at the Pfister Hotel. The extraordinary work from her residency caught my attention. The pieces felt like meditations on place and travel. It was like falling into a poem. “ -David M.
Art that reflects a feeling of home.
Stephanie Barenz is an artist who creates mixed media paintings that are about they ways our places form our inner landscapes. Each piece weaves together imagery from the natural world, her travels and personal stories, inviting viewers to explore their own connections to place and belonging.
How the work is made.
Stephanie's process is similar to the bodies of water she loves to paint - fluid and ever changing. She loves mixing different processes, such as printmaking, collage, painting, and digital photography. She often blends recognizable elements from her surroundings or memories with abstract shapes, whether by painting over collages or transferring them onto various surfaces.
The printing process.
Though her original works may not always be available, Stephanie works with a professional fine art printer to create stunning prints that look almost like the real thing. She offers a variety of framing and print sizes making it possible to enjoy these prints in any space.
